I remember a very funny episode of MASH. Hawkeye and Trapper were playing cards dressed in their gorilla suits. Frank and Hot Lips come in and Frank tells them that he has a hernia that he's been neglecting for some time now and it needs attention. Hawkeye responds, "Why do people always wait until it's too late before they see their gorilla?" Many Internet marketers are guilty of the same thing. This article is going to give you an example of what I'm talking about and then provide you with some basic steps to make sure you've planned ahead for any possible unforeseen events.
True story. Guy decides he's going to launch his new product. Great! He gets everything ready. He makes sure he has all his pre-launch material such as ads, viral campaign, the whole nine yards. He finally arrives at the day of the launch and he forgets to notify his payment processor that his is doing a big launch and to expect a large influx of income. Well, the launch goes off, the money comes in like water and the payment processor freezes his account. Why? They suspected fraudulent activity. Hey, when a guy is making $200 a month and then all of a sudden he rakes in $50,000 in six hours, payment processors tend to get a little bit suspicious.
Do you have ANY idea how much money this cost him? Do you have any idea how much money it would cost YOU if you were to do this very same thing? I have never done big launches before, but I know if I do, I better contact my payment processor to let them know that it's coming.
Okay, so what can you do to make sure that things like this don't happen? Well, here's what I do and it's very effective.
I make a list of everything to do with the launch or whatever it is I am working on. For example, you have to deal with domain registrars and hosting companies. If you get a lot of spam complaints either one of them may either suspend your domain or freeze your hosting. So make sure you have a backup plan like a backup server where you can quickly transfer the domain in case this happens.
What about launch partners? Make sure they're all on board. Contact each one and let them know that today is the day of the launch and ask them if they have any questions or concerns. The last thing you want is one of your launch partners to forget the day and not handle his end of the promotion.
What about download links? Have you checked to make sure that they are all working? Have you double checked your sales copy for any blatant errors? The last thing you want is to put that sales page out and the download link turns out to have a type and nobody can download your product. The support nightmare that you're going to run into will be a whopper.
After you have made your checklist, go through each item and make sure it's been handled. At least then you can be relatively sure that things will go smoothly. Yes, things will still happen, but by going through this process, you will minimize these risks.
